Bhai Phonta
Tue, 10 Nov 2026: a Bengali day of sibling blessing, phonta and festive food.
TRADITION & HOME
Bhai Phonta is the Bengali observance in which sisters bless their brothers for a long, protected life. In 2026 it falls on Tuesday, 10 November. In many homes a sister fasts until the ritual is complete, then the family gathers for gifts and a generous lunch. The emotional centre is not the scale of the celebration but the blessing itself.
A ritual plate may hold chandan or sandalwood paste, kajal, curd, dhaan-durbo—paddy and durba grass—and a lamp. The sister touches her little finger to her brother’s forehead three times and recites: “Bhaiyer kopale dilam phonta, Jomer duare porlo kanta.” Customs differ across families, so use the materials and words your household recognises.
After the phonta come blessings, presents and a table that can include luchi, payesh and mangsho. The day is a useful reminder that Bengali ritual is lived at home: set aside time, make the meal workable, and let elders explain the version they grew up with.
