2026 nirghonto

Saptami Mon, 16 Nov · Ashtami Tue, 17 Nov · Navami Wed, 18 Nov (main day) · Dashami Thu, 19 Nov (confirm). Many Chandannagar pujas perform Saptami, Ashtami and Navami rites together on Navami. The Dashami procession of illuminated floats begins around 6 pm and runs through the night.

Getting there and moving around

Take a Howrah–Bandel local to Chandannagar or Mankundu (about 45–50 minutes); Bhadreswar suits northern pujas. From Kolkata’s east bank, a train to Shyamnagar or Jagaddal followed by the Hooghly ferry is another option—check ferry hours on puja nights. In town, use totos for longer transfers and walk the dense lanes.

A workable day plan

  1. Reach Mankundu by 3 pm and walk Route 1 until about 6:30 pm.
  2. Take a toto to Chandannagar station; begin Route 2 at dusk.
  3. Pause near the station for jolbhora talshansh sandesh, a town signature.
  4. Walk Route 3 through old town, Chaulpatty Adi Maa and the Strand.
  5. Check the last train timetable before beginning the final circuit.

Monday 16 or Tuesday 17 November usually gives a little more room to walk; Wednesday 18 November, Navami, is the busiest.

Heritage between the pandals

Chandannagar was a French settlement until 1950. Its Strand runs beside the Hooghly; Sacred Heart Church dates to 1884, the Institut de Chandernagor museum occupies a former Dupleix-era building, and Nandadulal Temple offers a quieter heritage pause.
