Bhoot Chaturdashi

Sat, 7 Nov 2026: fourteen lamps, fourteen greens and a night of remembered stories.

TRADITION & HOME

Bhoot Chaturdashi falls on the night before Kali Puja. It is a Bengali household observance that brings together light, food and an old language of protection. Families light choddo prodip—fourteen small lamps—at the doorway, stairs and corners of the home. The lamps are understood as a welcome for ancestors and a gentle boundary against misfortune.

The meal includes choddo shaak, a mixed preparation of fourteen leafy greens. No single list governs every kitchen: neem, sorshe or mustard greens, palta or pointed-gourd leaves, helencha, shushni, kalkasunde and gima are among the greens often used. The custom is seasonal as well as symbolic, and families adapt it to what is available.

Modern Kolkata adds ghost-story walks, costume evenings and Halloween-style gatherings to an older autumn night. Those additions can be fun, but the domestic ritual remains its own thing: prepare the lamps safely, keep flames away from fabrics, and make an evening meal from the greens that your household knows.
